A Diet for Reducing Cancer Treatment Side Effects

Cancer cells crave sugar and don’t do well at burning fats.  So it makes sense that reducing the sugar that’s available to cancer cells might slow them down, while at the same time, improve energy for a person undergoing cancer treatments.  It’s not an approach you’ll hear much about in the United States, but this German Hospital is using a high-fat diet that’s low enough in carbs, it means the body produces a source of energy called, “ketones.”  Thus, it’s called a ketogenic diet.  The hospital reports that this diet reduces the side effects of cancer treatments, and the article references studies that indicate a low-carb diet can indeed slow down some cancers.  The article mentions the slow down of brain tumors in particular.  Thanks to the Nutrition Metabolism Society for sharing this article, and to Penny for passing it on.

    Hi, Benoi,

Some interesting ideas here. To clarify about this website, for the most part, these experts do not recommend a high protein diet. Instead, most advocate a high fat, adequate protein, low carb diet. As for red meat and saturated fat, check out the studies of Mozzafarian and Kraus, on this site and other places, that indicate red meat and saturated fat are less of a hazard than a high carb diet. Also Loren Cordain’s piece on Saturated Fat and Grains being a risky combination together.

I too am a runner, but I do enjoy carbs. Here are some foods you souhld eat every day:- Almonds or walnuts: Both have the kinds of fats in them that are good for your heart.- Fruits and veggies: 5 per day. Spinach is great protein and iron.- Fish: Salmon is rich in omega-3, which is also good for the heart.- Chicken: Very lean and protein filled.- Beans: Protein, protein, protein. Plus fiber to keep things moving.- Water: 8 glasses a day will flush you out and keep your brain active.- Yogurt: A fabulous source of protein and calcium. Things to avoid:- Fast food: Nothing good or healthy about it.- Red meat: Lots of people love it, but its not a healthy choice.- Saturated fat: Clogs the arteries and makes for a dysfunctional heart.
