LISTEN: Ketogenic Diet and Alzheimers – Sam Henderson

Sam Henderson is back in the news, with the Wall Street Journal reporting on his new  Axona “milkshake” that provides medium chain triglycerides for better memory in people with mild cognitive impairment.   We’ll share a recent interview with Henderson soon, but in the meantime, here’s one from our archives . . . a conversation with Sam from about 5 years ago that first broadcast on KGNU Boulder/Denver  . . .

INTRODUCTION TO 2005 INTERVIEW:  So far, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, despite billions of dollars invested toward stopping this murderer of memory. Sam Henderson is the chief science officer for Accera.  He’s one of the thousands of U-S scientists trying to change the high rates of Alzheimer’s disease.   But as an expert in the genetics of aging, Sam is trying an unconventional approach.  In 2004, he made world headlines when he published a study of mice bred for traits of Alzheimer’s disease. The mice did much better, not on a new drug, but on an unconventional diet. We’ll hear more about that diet during the hour ahead, along with the perspectives of other scientists looking for ways to understand, detect and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, decades before its damage becomes extensive.  Also featured are Alzheimers researchers Larry Goldstein of  the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, and Eric Reinman Executive Director of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute
